Get Folding Mirror
macOS 12 and later. Install it and write — there is no sign-up step.
Signed and notarised with Apple, so nothing stands between the download and the first line you write: drag it into Applications and open it.
Check it: shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/*.dmg
Install it and write: a 14-day trial of everything, with no account and no email address. Nothing is held back during it. After that it turns read-only — opening, reading, copying and exporting all keep working, and not a word is locked away. Price and terms are on the pricing page.
The parts you only read once: which build, how updates arrive, and where your documents stay.
Which build do I take?
Apple menu → About This Mac. If the chip line begins with Apple M, take the Apple silicon build; if it says Intel, take the other one. They are the same Folding Mirror — the split is only about the machine underneath, and one key works on either.
What changed in this version
Every release is written down, newest first, on the changelog. Version 1.1.6 went out on 2026-08-24.
How updates arrive
Folding Mirror asks this site for a version number, and that is the whole conversation — no identifier goes with it. Nothing downloads by itself either: when a newer version exists, Settings has a button that fetches it, and it installs on the next quit rather than in the middle of a sentence. A purchase carries a year of updates, and after that year the app keeps working on the last version it is entitled to.
Where your documents are
In the folder you chose, as plain .md files on disk. Nothing is imported and nothing is copied elsewhere, so removing the application is a matter of dragging it to the Trash: every document stays where it was, and opens in any other editor.
Other systems
macOS 12 and later today, on Apple silicon and Intel alike. Windows and Linux are planned; neither has a date.
