Settings and shortcuts

There are five settings pages, three of which belong to the AI assistant. This page covers the other two, plus the full shortcut table.

Opening settings

Press ⌘,, click the gear at the bottom of the sidebar, or use the menu bar: Folding Mirror → Preferences…. Five items down the left:

  • General: theme, accent, interface language, fonts, size. That's the next two sections.
  • Shortcuts: every command, rebound with a click.
  • Providers & models, Skills and MCP all belong to the AI assistant; see the assistant page.

Changes take effect immediately. There is no “Apply” button and nothing to restart.

Themes and the accent

A row of specimens at the top of Settings → General; click the one you want. It is not only the editor that changes: the interface, the page, the preview, the canvas and the window itself all go with it, title bar included.

  • Paper (light): The warm paper the app was drawn on.
  • Mist (light): A cooler neutral white, with blacker ink.
  • Dusk (dark): Warm dark: the same paper after sundown.
  • Midnight (dark): Near-black and cool, the highest contrast.

There is also Follow the system: Paper while your Mac is light, Dusk while it is dark, changing with it.

The accent

Six dots under the themes — Wine · Amber · Moss · Teal · Navy · Violet — colouring links, marks, selections, buttons and the caret. The last dot opens the system colour picker, so any colour at all is available.

On a dark theme the accent swaps for a lighter member of its own hue, and a colour of your own that cannot be read on the current paper is nudged until it can. You choose the meaning; the app keeps it legible.

Language, fonts and size

Interface language

Simplified Chinese and English, switched instantly — menus, panels, the assistant and the dialogs all move together. Nothing is restarted and nothing is lost.

Three fonts, set separately

Fonts are split three ways, each chosen on its own — the typeface you write in was never meant to be the typeface of the interface:

  • Interface font: sidebar, toolbar, status bar and the panels.
  • Body font: the text in the editor and preview. PDF and HTML exports use it too.
  • AI panel font: the conversation in the assistant panel (code blocks stay monospaced).

Each list starts with the eight ready-made choices — system default, Geist, Helvetica, Georgia, LXGW WenKai, Kai, Song, monospace — and goes on to every font installed on this machine, each name set in its own face, with a search box above the list. Geist and LXGW WenKai ship with Folding Mirror and need no installing.

Drawing font

Text on the drawing canvas has a list of its own: Excalidraw carries five faces — hand-drawn Excalifont, Nunito, Lilita One, Comic Shanns and Liberation Sans — and this setting decides which one a new drawing starts in. A drawing whose font you have changed keeps it, whatever the setting says later.

Body text size

The choices are 13.5 · 15.5 (default) · 17.5 · 19.5 · 22 (in px). Move this one and headings, source marks and code blocks scale with it — you never end up with large body text under a heading that stayed put.

Rebinding a shortcut

The defaults follow Typora's habits, so there is little to relearn coming from there. Changing one is easy:

  1. Open Settings → Shortcuts

There's a search box at the top; type “export” or “table” to narrow it down.

  2. Click the row you want to change

It becomes “Press the new shortcut”, and you press the combination you want. At least one modifier is required (⌘ ⌃ ⌥ ⇧).

  3. A conflict is reported on the spot

Something like “already used by Insert table”. Pick another, or clear that one first.

  4. Changed your mind

While recording, ⎋ cancels and ⌫ clears the binding. Changed rows are marked; “Restore default” resets one and “Restore all defaults” resets the lot.

The rows marked system (copy, paste, full screen and the like) belong to macOS or the system menus. They're listed for completeness and can't be changed.

The full shortcut table

Below is every binding Folding Mirror ships with, grouped as they are in settings. Rows marked alternate are a second key for the same command (quick open answers to both ⇧⌘O and ⌘P).

Where settings are kept

  • The settings themselves are a JSON file in Folding Mirror's own application data directory (under ~/Library/Application Support/), separate from your library.
  • Your API key isn't in it: the macOS keychain keeps that encrypted on its own.
  • Your documents aren't there by a single byte — they stay in the folder you pointed it at.
